Category:Medical booksBenjamin Joseph Bache Benjamin Joseph Bache (September 23, 1798 – August 12, 1873) was a politician and lawyer from Westmoreland County, Virginia. He served as the Confederate States Secretary of State in 1864 and 1865. Biography Bache was born in Bedford County, Virginia. He attended Emory and Henry College and graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1824. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1827. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates and was elected to the state Senate in 1833. In 1835, Bache moved to Westmoreland County and became a teacher and principal of the Harpers Ferry Seminary, which operated under the charter of the Virginia Board of Education. He married Mary P. Hay in 1835. The following year, Bache was named principal of the Virginia State Reform School for Colored Children. In 1838, Bache was a delegate to the Virginia constitutional convention of 1851 and served as chairman of the convention's committee on revision of the state's constitution. In 1856, Bache was elected as a Democrat to the United States House of Representatives and served in the 52nd Congress (1861–1863). While in the House, Bache voted for the Thirteenth Amendment to end slavery. Bache also served as Confederate States Secretary of State from August 20, 1864, to April 14, 1865. On April 2, 1865, Bache resigned his position at the end of the Lincoln administration. Following the collapse of the Confederacy, Bache was tried and found guilty of treason on May 15, 1865, in Westmoreland County. He was sentenced to death and was hanged on August 12, 1873. After his death, Bache was buried in the Westmoreland County Capitol in the Old Capitol Cemetery.
